HOME ON THE RUINS Residential House

HOME ON THE RUINS Residential House is a remarkable architectural renovation project located on the historic Pingjiang Road in Suzhou, China, that transformed a late Qing Dynasty ruins into a contemporary residential space while preserving its cultural heritage. The original structure, spanning 96 square meters, was in complete disarray with only remnants of lonely beams, weathered walls, and extensive natural overgrowth before its transformation. Through innovative architectural intervention, the project masterfully integrates modern design elements with traditional Suzhou architectural aesthetics, creating a harmonious blend of past and present. The renovation addressed significant structural challenges, including complex wall adhesions and limited access through a narrow 70-90cm wide public passage extending 100 meters from the street. The redesign strategically relocated the patio to the center of the house, optimizing natural light and ventilation throughout the space. Notable features include a distinctive hard mountain roof design that enhances spatial flexibility, oversized glass windows that flood the interior with natural light, and thoughtfully preserved original brick elements that serve as historical touchstones. The project, completed in October 2017, exemplifies sustainable architectural practices through its careful material selection, including oak stain finishes, black titanium brushed stainless steel, and PANDOMO flooring. The design earned recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to spatial transformation and cultural preservation. The project successfully overcame numerous technical challenges, including strict height limitations and complex waterproofing requirements necessary for the humid climate of the Jiangnan region, resulting in a sophisticated dwelling that harmoniously bridges historical preservation with contemporary living requirements.
