High Purity Taoist Palace On The Site Protective Shelter
High Purity Taoist Palace on the Site Protective Shelter is an innovative architectural conservation project that masterfully integrates modern protective structures with traditional Chinese religious architecture, completed in 2021 in Yingtan, Jiangxi. This significant architectural endeavor, spanning 11,365 square meters with a protective shelter area of 5,117.3 square meters, exemplifies a harmonious balance between archaeological preservation and contemporary religious functionality. The design, recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, features distinctive curved hip roofs and gable roofs that pay homage to classical Chinese architectural traditions while incorporating modern structural solutions. At its core, a remarkable column-free space extending 30 meters in both length and width serves as the main shelter, utilizing advanced steel construction techniques to minimize impact on the archaeological remains. The project's innovative foundation system employs four different types of foundations, carefully designed to protect both unearthed remains and underground relics, with remarkably thin column plinths of just 5cm in diameter preserving the historic cobblestone pavements. The architectural composition thoughtfully recreates the hierarchical order of the historical Taoist palace, maintaining the genius loci of the site while facilitating contemporary religious practices such as Taoist Granting, sacrificial rites, and daily worship. The design successfully addresses the complex challenge of preserving archaeological heritage while creating a living religious space, adhering to professional conservation principles including distinguishability, minimal intervention, reversibility, and sustainability.
