Hideaway Cafe Restaurant is an innovative interior design project that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of Japanese and Western design aesthetics, created by designers Pang Yu Kuo and Pan Hsien Kuo. Located adjacent to the Xike Railway Station in New Taipei City, this 74-square-meter establishment represents a sophisticated interpretation of the third space concept, offering urban dwellers a tranquil retreat from their fast-paced lives. The design philosophy draws inspiration from the Japanese Meiji Restoration period, incorporating traditional elements such as handcrafted wooden grilles, glass wall lamps, and ceramic tiles, while seamlessly integrating contemporary Western influences. The spatial arrangement is thoughtfully conceived, featuring a 90-centimeter entrance that deliberately minimizes commercial overtones and creates an element of discovery, true to its hideaway concept. The interior is strategically divided into two distinct zones: an open seating area facing the counter and a more private section that can be partitioned using curtained wooden door frames for intimate gatherings. The use of Southern Pine, glass, and mosaic tiles creates a warm, welcoming atmosphere that pays homage to Japanese traditions, including the symbolic placement of sake and wood elements that reference the cultural practice of drinking beneath trees. This Iron A' Design Award-winning project, completed in February 2019, demonstrates exceptional attention to cultural sensitivity and functional design, successfully creating a sanctuary that serves both office workers and families while addressing the modern urban dweller's need for connection and self-reflection.
