Hi Running Retail, Community-arcade is an innovative community-focused shopping complex that reimagines traditional retail spaces through its distinctive architectural design inspired by Chinese cultural elements. The centerpiece of this architectural achievement is a parametric atrium featuring a dramatic artificial tree structure that extends from the entrance lobby to the skylight roof, serving both aesthetic and functional purposes. This design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, masterfully integrates traditional community gathering concepts with modern retail requirements. The structure's design philosophy draws inspiration from the symbolic significance of Banyan trees in Chinese villages, historically serving as communal gathering spaces for storytelling and social interaction. The interior design deliberately departs from conventional luxury mall aesthetics, instead employing stained steel panels with random spray patterns to evoke a sense of aged authenticity, complemented by strategically placed warm-colored panels that create depth and enhance the space's welcoming atmosphere. The innovative skylight design, composed of triangular glass segments, creates a sophisticated curved perimeter that works in harmony with the tree-like structure's leaves to provide natural shading. The reception area features a distinctive low table arrangement reminiscent of traditional home settings, where staff serve tea to visitors, reinforcing the community-oriented approach. This architectural solution, completed between 2015 and 2017, effectively addresses the challenge of creating a retail environment that maintains a strong connection to local community values while providing modern shopping amenities.
