Hi Ladders High Pavilion
Hi Ladders High Pavilion is an innovative architectural intervention designed to empower left-behind children in rural China through participatory design and construction. Launched in 2018 at Tanghe Primary School in Luotian County, Hubei Province, this transformative project represents a significant advancement in educational architecture and social design. The pavilion's distinctive feature lies in its construction using twenty independent wooden ladders, common tools in rural China made from China fir, which can be reconfigured to create variable spatial forms. This architectural solution, developed under the concept of 'an indeterminate participatory open-ended situation' as theorized by Reyner Banham, enables children without professional training to actively participate in the design and building process. The structure, measuring 5600mm in width, 10500mm in depth, and 2900mm in height, serves as a multifunctional space where children can organize events, carnivals, and ceremonies. Notably recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, this project demonstrates exceptional innovation in combining educational objectives with architectural design. The pavilion's significance extends beyond its physical structure, serving as a medium to broaden children's perspectives and career aspirations beyond factory work. Through its low-cost implementation, utilizing common materials such as transparent tablecloths and cardboard alongside the wooden ladders, the project exemplifies how architectural innovation can achieve significant social impact while maintaining economic viability.
