This comprehensive communication system, developed in 2018, consists of a specialized handbook, communication board, and cards designed to facilitate immediate and effective interaction in medical environments where sign language interpreters may not be readily available. The concept employs a unique approach by focusing on situational and subject-specific sign language application rather than comprehensive language learning, enabling healthcare providers to quickly acquire and implement essential medical gestures. The system features a meticulously designed manual printed on bold art paper with distinctive neon orange accents, complemented by a disinfectable white acrylic glass communication board with rounded corners and tear-resistant cardboard communication cards that meet stringent medical facility requirements. The design addresses a critical need, considering approximately 140,000 people in Germany alone rely on sign language interpreters for daily communication, with medical interactions being particularly crucial. This innovative solution, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Social Design category, demonstrates exceptional consideration for accessibility, user experience, and practical implementation in healthcare settings.
