Heat Detectors

Heat detectors are devices designed to detect changes in temperature and alert individuals of potential fire hazards. Unlike smoke detectors, which detect the presence of smoke, heat detectors are triggered by an increase in temperature that exceeds a predetermined threshold. Heat detectors are commonly used in areas where smoke detectors may not be suitable, such as in dusty or smoky environments, or in areas where smoke detectors may be prone to false alarms, such as in kitchens or garages. There are two main types of heat detectors: fixed temperature detectors and rate-of-rise detectors. Fixed temperature detectors are designed to trigger an alarm when the ambient temperature reaches a certain pre-set temperature, typically between 135 and 190 degrees Fahrenheit. Rate-of-rise detectors, on the other hand, are designed to detect a rapid increase in temperature, such as that caused by a fire. These detectors trigger an alarm when the temperature rises at a rate faster than a pre-set threshold, typically between 10 and 15 degrees Fahrenheit per minute. Heat detectors are commonly used in commercial and industrial settings, such as factories, warehouses, and power plants, where the risk of fire is high and early detection is crucial. They are also used in residential settings, particularly in areas where smoke detectors may not be effective, such as in attics or garages. Overall, heat detectors play an important role in fire safety by providing an additional layer of protection against potential fire hazards. By detecting changes in temperature, they can alert individuals to potential fires before they have a chance to spread, allowing for a quicker response and potentially saving lives.
