Heart of Dawu Service Area is an architecturally significant service complex located along Highway No. 9 in Taiwan, serving as a gateway to Taitung County's South Link Line. This innovative architectural project, completed in June 2022, encompasses a total base area of 33,947.95 square meters with a two-story structure spanning 4,436.63 square meters. The design draws inspiration from lighthouse imagery and maritime elements, featuring a distinctive curved exterior that harmoniously integrates with its surrounding landscape of mountains and ocean. The structure employs reinforced concrete, wood, and glass materials, with earth tones chosen specifically to complement the natural environment. The architectural design deliberately weakens the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces, incorporating elements that reflect local fishing harbor aesthetics while providing functional amenities. Notable features include an elevator-accessible outdoor platform offering panoramic coastline views, a spiral staircase providing unobstructed vistas of Taitung, and reversed beams that create opportunities for innovative greenery integration. The facility serves multiple purposes beyond its primary function as a rest stop, acting as an Agricultural and Fishery Products Exhibition and Sales Center while promoting local culture and tourism. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design, demonstrates exceptional achievement in combining cultural sensitivity with architectural innovation. The design successfully overcomes significant logistical challenges related to its remote location through the employment of local workforce and careful attention to construction quality, particularly in achieving wave-like curved surfaces that required precise architectural oversight.
