Headquarters Riken Keiki Co. Ltd. Office

Headquarters Riken Keiki Co. Ltd. Office is an innovative architectural and interior design project completed in 2018 in Tokyo, Japan, that exemplifies the harmonious integration of biophilic design principles with contemporary workplace architecture. The four-story, 5,000-square-meter office building accommodates 200 workers and represents a significant advancement in workplace design methodology through its unique application of the French Matière technique, which creates depth and perspective through multiple layered materials and colors. The design philosophy centers on fostering improved interpersonal relationships and enhanced cognitive function among employees through thoughtfully crafted spatial arrangements and natural motifs. Despite the challenging site conditions with limited external windows on three elevations, the design team, led by Kentaro Yasufuku, transformed this constraint into an opportunity by developing an intricate interior landscape that simulates natural elements - incorporating carpet patterns that evoke gravel and grass fields, concrete pillars reminiscent of trees, and stone facing patterns that suggest flowing water. The project's innovative approach to workplace design earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its excellence in creating an environment that successfully balances functionality with psychological well-being. The interior spaces feature carefully orchestrated color transitions and material combinations that create a sense of depth and perspective, while the implementation of biophilic design elements provides employees with a nature-connected workspace that promotes creativity, collaboration, and improved cognitive function.
