Hattusa Turkish Restaurant and Bar is an exemplary interior design project that masterfully integrates ancient Hittite civilization's cultural elements into a contemporary dining space in England. The establishment, designed by Inan Gokcek, represents a sophisticated interpretation of Anatolian heritage through its thoughtfully curated interior elements and architectural details. The 50-square-meter space, converted from an 18th-century Victorian terrace building, features distinctive hand-carved clay walls depicting historical war and peace scenes, drawing direct inspiration from the ancient Hittite cuneiform writing system. The restaurant's centerpiece comprises a cross-shaped custom seating arrangement positioned to offer patrons comprehensive views of the intricate wall carvings, while a salvaged ceiling piece from 20th-century Western Turkey adds authentic historical context. The design incorporates laser-cut metal panels featuring Hittite patterns, created using contemporary CNC technology, alongside traditionally crafted elements such as hand-varnished staircases and custom-made seating. The space's materiality focuses on timber, clay, and metal, processed through both traditional and modern techniques to create a harmonious blend of historical and contemporary design elements. This innovative approach to restaurant design, which won an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, successfully creates an immersive dining environment that transports guests from England to ancient Anatolia through its thoughtful integration of craftsmanship, historical references, and modern design sensibilities.
