Harry Johnston
Harry Johnston was a British explorer, botanist, artist, and colonial administrator who made significant contributions to the study of African flora and fauna during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in London in 1858, Johnston began his career as a naturalist, traveling to Cameroon in 1882 to collect specimens for the British Museum. Over the next several decades, he conducted numerous expeditions throughout Africa, including the Congo, Uganda, and Kenya, where he discovered and classified many previously unknown species of plants and animals. In addition to his scientific work, Johnston was also a talented artist and writer, publishing several books and articles on his travels and experiences in Africa. He was particularly interested in the cultures and traditions of the peoples he encountered, and his writings provide valuable insights into the social and political dynamics of colonial Africa. Despite his many accomplishments, Johnston's legacy is somewhat controversial, as he was also a staunch advocate of British imperialism and played a key role in the colonization of several African territories. Nevertheless, his contributions to the study of African flora and fauna remain significant, and his writings and artwork continue to be studied and appreciated by scholars and enthusiasts alike.
