Hansha Reflection House Residential House

Hansha Reflection House Residential House is an innovative residential architectural project that exemplifies the harmonious integration of structural engineering, environmental consciousness, and aesthetic sophistication in contemporary Japanese residential design. Located in Nagoya, Japan, this two-story detached house, completed in 2011, features a remarkable 3.2-meter timber cantilever that extends over a three-car parking area, pushing the boundaries of traditional Japanese timber construction methods. The design employs a hybrid system combining traditional mortise and tenon joints with modern steel bracketing, utilizing glue-laminated structural timber members to achieve its distinctive form. The house's most notable feature is its reflective facade, constructed from large-dimension stainless steel panels, which creates a dynamic interplay with its surroundings, particularly reflecting the seasonal changes of nearby Sakura trees. The residence, built on a compact 8x20-meter plot, encompasses 124 square meters of living space and includes innovative features such as a courtyard that facilitates natural cooling through stack effect ventilation, reaching heights of 7.9 meters in its double-volume spaces. The project, which won the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional seismic resistance while maintaining aesthetic excellence through its material choices, including Galvalume cladding and exposed structural elements that add rustic nuances to the interior spaces. The design concept explores multiple interpretations of reflection, from the literal mirror-like exterior surfaces to metaphorical considerations of environmental and spatial relationships, creating a dwelling that continuously transforms its appearance throughout the day while maintaining functional efficiency and structural integrity.
