Hangzhou Haishu School is an innovative educational architecture project that exemplifies child-centered design principles through its thoughtful integration of kindergarten and primary school facilities. The architectural concept draws inspiration from children's creative expressions, specifically a child's drawing of an ideal school environment, resulting in a campus that resembles a small town with interconnected spaces. Spanning 28,000 square meters, the design brilliantly divides the campus into 15 distinct gabled volumes, with their scale progressively increasing to accommodate different age groups and developmental stages of the children. The complex encompasses teaching buildings, administrative facilities, a gymnasium, and a dining hall, all ingeniously connected through a network of corridors and inner courtyards of varying degrees of openness. A distinguishing feature of the design is its dynamic arrangement of exposed staircases and corridors, which serve dual purposes as both circulation routes and vibrant activity spaces. The architecture creates an engaging learning environment through its thoughtful consideration of spatial relationships and scale, fostering a comfortable and stimulating atmosphere for young learners. The project's exceptional architectural merit was recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2022, acknowledging its innovative approach to educational facility design. The design's success lies in its ability to create a nurturing educational environment that responds to children's developmental needs while maintaining functional efficiency and aesthetic appeal.
