Hamon Clock
Hamon Clock is an innovative timepiece that seamlessly integrates traditional horology with fluid dynamics, designed by Japanese engineer and designer Kensho Miyoshi. This groundbreaking design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, consists of a flat, round chinaware base filled with water, featuring clock hands that create gentle ripples on the water's surface with each passing second. The name Hamon derives from the Japanese word for ripples, reflecting both its aesthetic and functional elements. The clock's unique design philosophy explores the metaphysical nature of time through the continuous overlap of water ripples, effectively visualizing both the present moment and the accumulation of past movements through the water's dynamic surface patterns. The technical implementation involves a sophisticated waterproofing system, where the clock movement is controlled by an external microcontroller and protected with specialized sealant, overcoming the significant challenge of maintaining electronic functionality in a water-based environment. Measuring 400 millimeters in diameter and 60 millimeters in height, the clock creates an additional dimensional aspect through light interaction, as the ripples project mesmerizing patterns onto nearby walls. This design represents a fascinating convergence of ancient timekeeping methods, which often utilized natural phenomena, with contemporary mechanical precision, offering a philosophical commentary on the nature of time itself. The project, initiated in June 2013, underwent multiple iterations, including versions with black chinaware and gold clock hands, as well as white chinaware with black hands, both exhibited at the University of Tokyo, demonstrating the designer's commitment to perfecting both the functional and aesthetic aspects of this innovative timepiece.
