Hakusui Nursery School Nursery School
Hakusui Nursery School Nursery school is an innovative architectural project located in Sakura, Chiba, Japan, that reimagines the traditional concept of childcare facilities through its unique large house design philosophy. This distinguished educational facility, designed by architect Kentaro Yamazaki, accommodates 60 pupils and represents a significant departure from conventional nursery school architecture. The design's most notable feature is its stepped, single-room layout that follows the natural topography of its mountainous and forested setting, creating an organic integration with the surrounding landscape. The structure employs sophisticated environmental design principles, incorporating large sliding window frames on the northern and southern facades to establish natural ventilation patterns through forest-like interior pillars. A distinctive element of the design is a small pond on the southern end that collects rainwater and works in conjunction with roof-mounted sprinklers to enhance the building's natural cooling system. The interior space is thoughtfully designed to foster intergenerational interaction among children aged 3 to 5 years old, promoting natural social development within a domestic-scale environment. The facility includes an innovative observation stage that encourages parental engagement and community interaction, while the open-plan design minimizes blind spots, ensuring optimal safety without obvious barriers. This architectural achievement, recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates excellence in combining functional efficiency with environmental sensitivity. The project successfully challenges institutional norms while creating a nurturing environment that connects children with nature and their community, exemplifying how architectural design can enhance early childhood education experiences.
