Guy Tachard
Guy Tachard was a French Jesuit missionary, mathematician, and astronomer who lived during the 17th century. He was born in Lyon in 1651 and joined the Society of Jesus at the age of 20. Tachard was sent on several missions to Asia, where he made significant contributions to the fields of mathematics and astronomy. He was also involved in diplomatic efforts, serving as a translator and negotiator between the French and the Siamese court. Tachard's most notable achievement was his participation in the first French embassy to Siam (present-day Thailand) in 1685, where he was tasked with establishing a French presence in the region and promoting trade relations. During his time in Siam, Tachard conducted astronomical observations and produced maps of the region, which were later published in his book Voyages de Siam des Pères Jesuites (1686). Tachard's work helped to advance the study of astronomy and mathematics in Europe and paved the way for future scientific expeditions to Asia.
