Groove Desk Lamp is an innovative lighting solution designed by Ruiqing Hu and Jun Zhang that seamlessly integrates illumination functionality with intuitive user interaction and pen storage capabilities. This sophisticated desk lamp, which earned the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, represents a thoughtful approach to addressing common workplace behaviors through intelligent design. The lamp's distinctive feature lies in its automated interaction system, whereby the illumination is controlled by the presence or absence of a writing instrument in its specially designed groove, effectively combining practical storage with smart lighting control. The design comprises a sleek base measuring 140mm in width, 190mm in length, and 16mm in height, with an adjustable arm that reaches 404mm when fully extended. Constructed primarily from ABS plastic through injection molding techniques, the lamp incorporates an advanced sensor system within its base recess that detects object placement to manage the lighting automation. The lamp's functionality is enhanced by a manual brightness control knob integrated into the base, which also operates the console light. This innovative approach to lighting control not only promotes energy conservation by ensuring lights are turned off when not in use but also addresses the common problem of misplaced writing instruments in workplace environments. The design's development, which took place between October 2018 and January 2019, focused on creating an intuitive user experience while maintaining aesthetic appeal and functional efficiency. The lamp exemplifies how thoughtful design can influence positive behavioral changes through its unique combination of lighting and storage solutions, demonstrating excellence in both form and function within the contemporary lighting design landscape.
