Gridshell
Gridshell is a type of structure made from a grid of straight or curved elements that can bend to form strong, curved shapes. In the context of structural form, gridshells use a pattern of crossing beams or strips that are flexible when flat but become very stiff when shaped into a curve. This method lets designers create large, open spaces with very little material, because the curved shape gives the structure its strength. Gridshells are often made by first laying out a flat grid, then gently pushing or pulling it into a three-dimensional form, which locks the shape in place. This technique makes it possible to build wide roofs or canopies without needing many columns or heavy supports.
