Gregoria Lounge
Gregoria Lounge is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the fusion of traditional Filipino craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetic sensibilities. Created by Filipino designer Ito Kish, this semi-circular two to three-seater lounge chair stands as a remarkable reimagining of classical architectural elements, particularly the baluster, which has been a defining feature of traditional Filipino home design since the Spanish colonial period. The design's distinctive characteristics include an intricately crafted backrest composed of kiln-dried Gmelina balusters arranged at varying heights to create a dynamic visual texture, complemented by a seat featuring handwoven split rattan solihiya in an elegant sunburst pattern. The piece's dimensions measure 1803.4mm in width, 825.5mm in depth, and 1727.2mm in height, with a seat height of 482.6mm. The choice of materials reflects a strong commitment to sustainability, utilizing fast-growing Gmelina wood and locally sourced rattan, both indigenous to the Philippines. The design not only pays homage to Filipino architectural heritage but also incorporates practical environmental considerations, with the well-spaced balusters facilitating natural air circulation, a feature reminiscent of traditional Filipino home ventilation systems. This innovative approach to furniture design earned the piece a Silver A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, recognizing its exceptional blend of cultural significance, artistic merit, and functional design. The lounge's aesthetic appeal is further enhanced by its throne-like appearance, created by the semi-circular arrangement of ornately handcarved balusters, which draws inspiration from both religious and regal motifs prevalent in Filipino culture.
