Green Cage Residential Residence

Green Cage Residential Residence

Green Cage Residential Residence is an innovative architectural project that exemplifies the harmonious integration of urban living spaces with natural elements, designed by Jonathan A Gibb. This residential and pottery studio complex, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a sophisticated approach to inner-city dwelling through its unique concept of creating an oasis within an industrial context. The design comprises three distinct components: a visually porous garage with an elevated deck, a main house featuring a multi-layered living space, and a sunken pottery studio, all connected by elevated walkways. The structure's most distinctive feature is its galvanized steel cage framework with link-wire mesh, designed to support climbing vegetation and incorporate crystal glass shards that refract natural light into the interior spaces. The main residence demonstrates exceptional environmental consideration through its incorporation of a roof pond system with water-filtering capabilities, strategic natural lighting through ocular skylights, and thoughtful thermal management. Constructed using a carefully selected palette of materials including concrete, steel, double glazing, and wood fiber insulation, the building showcases innovative solutions for urban sustainability. The design's response to its industrial context while creating an intimate garden environment represents a significant achievement in contemporary residential architecture, effectively blurring the boundaries between built form and landscape. The project's sophisticated approach to space utilization, environmental integration, and functional design earned recognition from the A' Design Award for its contribution to architectural innovation and sustainable urban living solutions.
