Greatest Luck Residence
Greatest Luck Residence is a contemporary residential interior design project that exemplifies the integration of modern aesthetics with functional family living across a five-story, 390-square-meter dwelling in Taichung, Taiwan, completed between September 2023 and January 2024. This residential design addresses the complex spatial requirements of a family of four while accommodating their distinctive lifestyle preferences, including frequent social gatherings and a desire for Korean restaurant-inspired hospitality spaces. The project demonstrates sophisticated spatial planning through its strategic division of public and private zones, with particular attention to creating an entertainment-focused basement level that serves as a guest house without disrupting the children's learning environment on upper floors. The basement, despite its challenging dimensions of merely 220 centimeters in height and a narrow, elongated footprint, has been transformed through innovative design interventions including mirror ceiling applications that extend visual perception, strategic lighting through fireplace illumination, and functional zoning that separates garage access from entertainment areas featuring KTV club facilities and mahjong spaces. The first floor establishes an open-plan public area dominated by the modern design vocabulary of black, white, and gray tones, complemented by the original builder-installed marble flooring, milk tea-colored art paint walls, and leather furnishings that create visual consistency throughout the space. The kitchen integration showcases imported German cabinetry with handleless glazed black textures, built-in electrical storage, and sophisticated hardware systems that enhance both storage capacity and culinary workflow efficiency. The upper residential floors present individualized bedroom designs that maintain modern stylistic coherence while addressing personalized spatial requirements, with the master bedroom particularly notable for its layered wall treatments incorporating imitation water mold paint, cloud brush techniques, and specialized faux stone finishes that create textural depth and dimensional interest. The design methodology reflects a people-oriented approach that synthesizes occupant lifestyle patterns with aesthetic considerations, employing varied material palettes and proportional line work to establish spatial character and visual refinement. The project received recognition through the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2025, acknowledging its practical innovations and professional execution standards within contemporary residential design practice. Greatest Luck Residence represents a comprehensive design solution that balances the competing demands of family functionality, social hospitality, cultural preferences informed by Korean dining aesthetics, and modern design principles, demonstrating how residential architecture can accommodate complex programmatic requirements while maintaining aesthetic coherence and spatial quality. The design's success lies in its ability to transform challenging spatial constraints, particularly in the basement level, into functional assets through strategic design interventions, while simultaneously creating distinct atmospheric zones that support diverse activities ranging from children's study to adult entertainment without spatial or acoustic interference. The material selection strategy emphasizes durability and maintenance efficiency alongside aesthetic considerations, with particular attention to how surface treatments, lighting design, and spatial proportions contribute to perceived spaciousness and environmental comfort. The integration of smart lighting systems and contemporary amenities throughout the residence reflects an understanding of how technological infrastructure supports modern domestic life while remaining visually unobtrusive within the overall design composition. The project exemplifies contemporary interior design practice's evolution toward holistic spatial planning that considers not merely aesthetic outcomes but the complex interrelationships between spatial organization, material performance, cultural preferences, and daily living patterns, demonstrating how residential design can successfully mediate between individual family requirements and broader design principles to create environments that enhance quality of life through thoughtful spatial articulation and material specification.
