Gray Box Residence

Gray Box Residence

Gray Box Residence is an innovative architectural addition project located in a coastal village of Shantou, China, that reimagines the conventional approach to rural self-built housing through sophisticated minimalist design principles. Completed in March 2017 under the creative direction of chief designer Peihe Xie and team, this 250-square-meter residence represents a significant departure from traditional countryside architecture by incorporating contemporary design elements while maintaining functional integrity. The project's distinctive aesthetic is characterized by a refined color palette of black, white, and gray, creating a harmonious visual balance that challenges the stereotypical image of rural housing. The design philosophy emphasizes spatial efficiency and aesthetic refinement, featuring thoughtfully proportioned spaces enhanced by large windows that frame the surrounding landscape and incorporate natural light through carefully designed screening elements, fostering a contemplative, Zen-like atmosphere. The material selection demonstrates a sophisticated approach to texture and ambiance, utilizing a combination of wood finishes, tiles, gray glass, stone, and matte white paint to create a cohesive design language. The interior spaces are further elevated through the strategic incorporation of warm earth yellow accents and artistic elements, including carefully selected black, white, and gray artwork that complements the overall design scheme. The project, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, successfully bridges Eastern and Western design philosophies while establishing a new paradigm for rural residential architecture through its minimalist approach and attention to detail.
