Gravity Cinema

Gravity Cinema is an innovative architectural and interior design project that reimagines the traditional cinema experience through a conceptual interpretation of Einstein's theory of General Relativity. Located at a historic former airport site in Shanghai, this 2,800-square-meter space transforms theoretical physics into tangible design elements, featuring a distinctive white ceiling swirl that mimics the formation of a black hole. The design's centerpiece is a dynamic vortex-like structure that creates an illusion of particles flowing along a trajectory, manifesting as a graduated light cove that ascends from low to high points. This ambitious project, completed in January 2020, seamlessly integrates curved lines throughout its architecture, with spiral ceiling patterns directly influencing the floor planning and wall light trough designs. The interior aesthetic is characterized by flowing lines adorned with gold and silver accents, creating twisted patterns reminiscent of rolled leaves in a distorted space. The project's technical complexity required extensive prototyping and modeling to simulate vortex dynamics, utilizing materials such as stone, acoustic panels, plastic laminate, carpet, and gypsum board. This exceptional design, which won the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, successfully captures the essence of weightlessness and spatial distortion, offering visitors an immersive cinematic environment that transcends conventional theater design while paying homage to both scientific principles and human aspirations for flight.
