Graphics Interlace

Graphics Interlace is a technique used in digital imaging and video display technology to enhance the perceived resolution and reduce flickering of an image. It involves alternately displaying odd and even lines of an image in rapid succession, effectively doubling the refresh rate of the display. This method was particularly prevalent in older cathode-ray tube (CRT) displays, where the phosphors on the screen would illuminate in response to an electron beam scanning across the surface. By interlacing the lines, the display could achieve a higher apparent resolution without increasing the bandwidth requirements. However, interlacing can also introduce visual artifacts, such as line twitter and interline flicker, which become more noticeable when there is significant motion in the image. Despite these drawbacks, interlacing was a crucial innovation in the development of television and video technology, enabling the transmission and display of higher-resolution images within the constraints of available bandwidth. As display technology has advanced, particularly with the widespread adoption of progressive scan displays like LCDs and OLEDs, interlacing has become less common, with most modern displays favoring progressive scanning for its superior image quality and reduced visual artifacts. Nevertheless, the concept of interlacing remains an important part of the history of visual technology and continues to be used in certain specialized applications. Interestingly, the term interlace is derived from the Latin word interlaqueare, which means to entangle or to interweave, reflecting the way in which the technique weaves together alternating lines of an image.
