Gospel Church

Gospel Church is an innovative architectural project completed in 2020, situated in Yunlin County, Taiwan, that masterfully integrates Chinese cultural elements with Christian symbolism. The structure's distinctive exterior features a Chinese-style screen design complemented by twelve symbolic pillars, representing the Twelve Tribes of Israel while simultaneously addressing practical considerations of the coastal environment's strong winds. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning religious edifice, designed by Shi-Zhe Lo, encompasses 496 square meters and demonstrates exceptional attention to structural integrity and environmental adaptation. The design incorporates sophisticated engineering solutions, including enhanced concrete composition with improved acid and alkali resistance, reinforced foundations, and a 30% increase in waterproofing capabilities. The building's innovative features extend to its environmental consciousness, utilizing natural wind convection through its architectural form to reduce air conditioning requirements, while LED lighting systems minimize energy consumption. A notable technical achievement is the integration of a 20-ton water storage facility, addressing local dry spell challenges. The structure's aesthetic appeal is enhanced through thoughtful details such as a repurposed stairwell offering scenic views through transparent windows, surrounding low walls, strategic lighting that penetrates the punching plate, and carefully positioned larch trees that create layered, exotic aesthetics. The project, which required extensive preliminary research including climate analysis, area planning, and wind tunnel testing, stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of functional religious architecture with contemporary sustainable design principles, earning recognition at the prestigious A' Design Award competition in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category.
