Golem Bar

Golem Bar is an innovative interior design project located in Shatin, Hong Kong, encompassing 2000 square feet of thoughtfully crafted space that masterfully blends mysterious, elegant, and classical design elements. Conceived and executed by designer Jingyi Cai, this Silver A' Design Award-winning establishment draws inspiration from Jewish folklore's concept of the golem - an anthropomorphic being created from inanimate matter - translating this mystical narrative into a sophisticated architectural language. The design philosophy emerged from an accidental photographic moment during the site survey, where an overexposed, abstract image captured the raw potential of light and shadow interplay. The space is characterized by its sophisticated material palette, featuring stainless steel, iron, glass, and ceramic tiles, creating an interplay of reflective surfaces that manipulate light in captivating ways. Despite budget constraints, the design team demonstrated exceptional resourcefulness by personally installing lighting fixtures and hand-painting murals, showcasing their technical expertise and artistic capabilities. The interior's composition deliberately minimizes color usage, instead focusing on the dramatic interaction between metallic surfaces, mirrors, and carefully orchestrated lighting that evokes comparisons to Rembrandt's masterful use of light and shadow. Completed in July 2018, this award-winning project exemplifies excellence in interior space design, particularly noteworthy for its innovative approach to spatial arrangement, material selection, and lighting design, earning recognition in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award category for its outstanding contribution to contemporary interior design.
