Go Home Multifunctional Tent
Go Home Multifunctional tent is an innovative social design solution created to address the critical issue of homelessness in urban environments, particularly during harsh winter conditions. Designed by Tian Zhuang and Xu Ruimin, this transformative shelter system represents a significant advancement in temporary housing solutions, combining functionality with humanitarian considerations. The design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Social Design category, features a unique door-like structure that can be mounted on city walls and transforms into a protective shelter through a rotating and drawing mechanism. The tent's most distinctive feature is its innovative thermal management system, incorporating a polymer gel layer beneath the outer surface that harnesses solar energy during daylight hours and releases it gradually throughout the night, providing crucial warmth to its occupants. With dimensions of 750mm in width, 1800mm in depth, and 700mm in height, the structure is engineered to offer adequate personal space while maintaining a compact footprint when not in use. The design employs thermal materials and nylon in its construction, prioritizing both durability and cost-effectiveness. This humanitarian design solution not only addresses practical needs but also considers the psychological aspect of homelessness by incorporating the symbolic element of a door, creating a sense of dignity and home-like comfort for its users. The project, completed in 2017 at Politecnico di Milano, demonstrates how thoughtful design can contribute to addressing social challenges while maintaining urban functionality, as the structure does not impede pedestrian traffic when deployed.
