Ging Chair

Ging Chair

Ging Chair is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, created by Canadian architect and designer Alan Hung. This distinguished seating solution, which earned the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2021, draws its distinctive form from the unexpected inspiration of a childhood slingshot, translating this playful memory into a sophisticated and functional piece of furniture. The chair features a minimal yet dynamic silhouette characterized by its seamless joints and fluid lines, making it appear as a singular form despite being constructed from five primary components: front leg, rear leg, seat, armrest, and backrest. Crafted from carefully selected oak and beech solid wood, the chair's production process combines advanced 5-axis CNC machining for complex backrest shapes with expert handcraftsmanship to ensure superior finish quality. The design prioritizes ergonomic comfort through its thoughtfully positioned round backrest and optimized recline angle, while maintaining a striking aesthetic appeal. Available in versions with and without armrests, the latter offering stackability for versatile space management, the Ging Chair measures 540mm in width, 520mm in depth, and 730mm in height. The development process, which spanned from March to November 2020 in Vancouver, Canada, involved extensive research into structural optimization and joint placement, resulting in a design that achieves both visual lightness and structural integrity. The chair's seamless construction technique creates an illusion of unity in form, while its carefully considered proportions and material selection contribute to its modern, sophisticated presence in any interior setting.
