Gilbert Laing Meason

Gilbert Laing Meason was a Scottish writer, lawyer, and architectural historian who lived from 1769 to 1832. He was born in Orkney and educated at the University of Edinburgh, where he studied law. However, his true passion was for architecture and he spent much of his life studying and writing about the subject. Meason's most famous work is his book, The Architecture of the Middle Ages, which was published in 1811. This book was one of the first to analyze medieval architecture in a serious and scholarly way, and it helped to establish the field of architectural history as a legitimate academic discipline. Meason's book was also notable for its beautiful illustrations, which were drawn by his wife, Sophia. In addition to his work on architecture, Meason was also a prolific writer on a variety of other subjects. He wrote books on topics such as Scottish history, travel, and even a novel. Meason was also a passionate collector of art and antiques, and he amassed a large collection of paintings, sculptures, and other objects. Despite his many accomplishments, Meason's life was not without its struggles. He suffered from poor health for much of his life, and he was often in debt due to his extravagant spending habits. Nevertheless, he remained dedicated to his work and his passions until his death in 1832.
