George Price
George Price was an American evolutionary biologist and population geneticist who made significant contributions to the field of evolutionary theory. He is best known for his work on the evolution of altruism, which he explored through mathematical models and computer simulations. Price's research challenged the prevailing view that natural selection only favored behaviors that benefited the individual, and instead argued that altruistic behaviors could evolve if they benefited the survival and reproduction of close relatives. Price's work on the evolution of altruism was groundbreaking and influential, but he struggled with mental health issues throughout his life. He became increasingly interested in religion and spirituality, and eventually converted to Christianity. He began to give away his possessions and eventually moved to London, where he lived as a homeless person and continued to work on his mathematical models. Tragically, Price's mental health continued to deteriorate, and he died by suicide in 1975. His work on the evolution of altruism has continued to inspire and inform research in evolutionary biology and related fields.
