George Dunning
George Dunning (1929-1997) was a Canadian artist who made significant contributions to the world of animation. While he is primarily known for his work as the director of the Beatles' animated film, Yellow Submarine (1968), Dunning had a long and varied career in the arts. He studied at the Ontario College of Art and began his career as a printmaker and painter, with a focus on the Canadian landscape and wildlife. His work was heavily influenced by traditional Canadian art, and he had solo exhibitions of his paintings and prints in London, Paris, and across Canada and the United States. In the 1960s, Dunning began working in animation, creating short films for the National Film Board of Canada. He quickly gained a reputation for his innovative and experimental approach to animation, and was eventually approached by the Beatles to direct their first feature-length animated film. Yellow Submarine was a groundbreaking film that combined psychedelic imagery with the Beatles' music, and it remains a beloved classic to this day. After Yellow Submarine, Dunning continued to work in animation, creating short films and commercials for clients such as Coca-Cola and McDonald's. He also taught animation at various institutions, including the Royal College of Art in London. Dunning passed away in 1997, but his contributions to the world of animation continue to be celebrated.
