GAIA Mixed-Use Building
GAIA Mixed-Use Building is an innovative architectural masterpiece located in Quito, Ecuador, that exemplifies the seamless integration of form, function, and urban connectivity. This Golden A' Design Award-winning structure, completed in 2016, represents a significant advancement in architectural design and construction technology in Ecuador, particularly as the first building in the country to utilize Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) panels. The 14-story structure, measuring 31m x 30m x 59m with a total floor area of 15,000 square meters, combines residential and commercial spaces through a sophisticated design approach that responds dynamically to its urban context. The building's distinctive sculptural form is characterized by strategic corner removals that create engaging double and triple-height spaces, while simultaneously providing shade protection from the intense Andean sun. The design incorporates 59 apartments ranging from 50 to 150 square meters and 60 office spaces between 44 and 113 square meters, complemented by lifestyle amenities including a spa, gym, and cinema. The facade's innovative parametric design employs a repeating pattern system that optimizes fabrication efficiency while maintaining aesthetic sophistication. The structure's integration with its surroundings is enhanced by its proximity to key urban elements including a metro stop, shopping center, and the city's principal urban park, making it a catalyst for urban development. The building's architectural significance lies in its successful merger of advanced construction techniques, sustainable design principles, and contextual sensitivity, demonstrated through its sophisticated facade system that combines concrete, steel, and GFRC panels with adjustable connections for precise alignment.
