GaBe Totoro Retail Space

GaBe Totoro Retail Space is an innovative retail environment design that masterfully integrates Japanese animation aesthetics with contemporary architectural elements, completed in 2018 in Kunming, China. This 230-square-meter commercial space, designed by Hao Fan and Longhui Lee, draws inspiration from the beloved Japanese animated film Totoro, translating its pastoral freshness and enchanting elements into a sophisticated retail experience. The design employs a distinctive box-based spatial organization system, where spaces are segmented into varying sizes of virtual and real compartments, creating a dynamic interplay of volumes. The interior architecture utilizes a carefully curated material palette including antique bricks, extensive log finishes, and modern industrial elements such as steel plates and square pipes, establishing a harmonious balance between warmth and contemporary aesthetics. The space's innovative layout incorporates multiple functional zones, each meticulously planned to optimize product display and customer flow while maintaining a cohesive narrative throughout. Through its sophisticated implementation of layered relationships and sheet structures, the design creates a fluid, rhythmic progression between different areas, effectively breaking traditional retail space conventions. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category demonstrates exceptional achievement in spatial planning, material selection, and thematic integration, setting new standards for experiential retail design. The space successfully combines commercial functionality with artistic expression, featuring thoughtfully considered viewing angles, horizon lines, and circulation patterns that enhance both the browsing and purchasing experience while maintaining the thematic integrity inspired by its animated muse.
