Fungi Narratives Multifuncional Amadou is an innovative experimental material and design research project that explores sustainable alternatives through fungal-based materials, particularly focusing on the Fomes Fomentarius and Fomitopsis Betulina species. This groundbreaking initiative, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design category, represents a significant advancement in sustainable material development through its exploration of fungi as an organic material source. The project encompasses a comprehensive investigation into creating biodegradable materials for fashion, accessories, and paper production, with a particular emphasis on amadou, a leather-like substance derived from fungi. Through over 100 experimental iterations, the research successfully demonstrated the potential of combining natural fungi materials with biodegradable biopolymers, creating versatile applications ranging from face masks to embroidered fashion pieces. The innovative approach involves harvesting fungi without negatively impacting the ecosystem, processing them through various techniques, and combining them with compostable bioplastics made from plant-based glycerin, agar agar, and water. The resulting materials showcase diverse properties and applications, with the amadou face mask measuring 20cm in length and 11cm in width, while the paper collection features 25 different qualities in various sizes. This project not only demonstrates the practical applications of fungal materials in design but also highlights the potential for sustainable alternatives in the fashion and accessories industry, presenting a promising direction for environmentally conscious material innovation.
