Fulco Di Verdura
Fulco di Verdura is an Italian jewellery designer who rose to prominence in the 20th century, known for his innovative and bold designs that challenged traditional jewellery conventions. Born in 1898 in Palermo, Sicily, Verdura grew up in an aristocratic family and was exposed to art and culture from a young age. He began his career in Paris, working for renowned jewellery houses such as Chanel and Cartier, where he honed his skills and developed his unique style. Verdura's designs often featured vibrant, colorful gemstones and unconventional materials, such as shells and ceramics, which he combined in unexpected ways to create striking, one-of-a-kind pieces. In 1939, he moved to the United States and established his own jewellery brand, Verdura, which quickly gained a following among Hollywood celebrities and high society. Verdura's designs were characterized by their whimsical, nature-inspired motifs, such as animals, flowers, and fruits, as well as their bold, sculptural forms. He was also known for his use of gold and platinum, which he often combined in a technique called bi-metal, creating a striking contrast between the warm and cool tones. Throughout his career, Verdura collaborated with many notable figures, including Salvador Dalí and Coco Chanel, and his designs were worn by iconic women such as Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, and the Duchess of Windsor. Verdura's legacy continues to influence the world of jewellery design, with his brand still producing collections inspired by his original sketches and designs.
