Foundry Commercial is an innovative architectural project that seamlessly merges historical preservation with contemporary design elements, situated in Salt Lake City, Utah. This ambitious 32,626.77 square-foot property, designed by architect Mohamed Shabana, represents a sophisticated approach to adaptive reuse, incorporating sustainable practices through the extensive use of recycled and reclaimed materials. The design philosophy centers on creating a dreamlike transitional experience, where multiple concepts and atmospheres flow seamlessly throughout the space. The structure features a distinctive contrast between its exterior, which pays homage to the building's historical character while incorporating modern geometric elements in its greenhouse design, and its interior, which houses a diverse array of functional spaces including a multi-purpose event hall, restaurants, coffee shops, meeting rooms, and art spaces. The project, completed in 2019-2020, garnered recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category for its innovative approach to spatial design and sustainable architecture. Notable design elements include the use of reclaimed wood, bricks, and copper plates on facades, complemented by geometric metal-frame glass structures, stucco finishes, and local interlocking stone, all working together to create a harmonious blend of past and present. The interior design emphasizes community engagement and versatility, with each space carefully crafted to evoke distinct atmospheric experiences through thoughtful material selection, color schemes, and acoustic considerations.
