Food waste is a global issue that refers to the discarding or loss of food that is safe and nutritious for human consumption. Food waste has significant economic, environmental, and social implications. Economically, it represents a wasted investment of resources, including water, land, energy, labor, and capital. Environmentally, food waste contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and inefficient land use, as the resources used to produce the wasted food could have been allocated more efficiently. Decomposing food waste in landfills also generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Socially, food waste exacerbates food insecurity and hunger, as the wasted food could have been redistributed to those in need. Reducing food waste requires a multi-faceted approach, including improving supply chain efficiency, enhancing storage and transportation infrastructure, promoting consumer education, and implementing effective waste management strategies. Efforts to minimize food waste can contribute to sustainable resource management, climate change mitigation, and improved food security.
