Flushing Cisterns For Water Closets

Flushing Cisterns For Water Closets

A flushing cistern is a container that holds water used to flush a water closet, also known as a toilet. The cistern is typically located above or behind the toilet bowl and is connected to it by a pipe. When the toilet is flushed, the cistern releases a predetermined amount of water into the bowl, which then washes away the waste. Flushing cisterns have been used in water closets for over a century and have undergone significant changes in design and functionality. Early cisterns were made of ceramic or metal and were manually operated by a pull chain or lever. Today, most cisterns are made of plastic and are operated by a push button or lever. Cisterns can be either low-level or high-level. Low-level cisterns are mounted on the wall behind the toilet bowl and are connected to it by a short pipe. High-level cisterns are mounted on the wall above the toilet bowl and are connected to it by a long pipe. High-level cisterns were more common in the past but are now less popular due to their high installation costs and the potential for leaks. In addition to their primary function of flushing waste, cisterns can also be used to conserve water. Dual-flush cisterns have two buttons or levers, one for a full flush and one for a partial flush. The partial flush uses less water and is intended for liquid waste, while the full flush is intended for solid waste.
