Flowing Cloud Township Villa Hospitality
Flowing Cloud Township Villa Hospitality is an exemplary architectural renovation project located in Qinglongwu, a centennial village in Tonglu County, Hangzhou, that masterfully transforms four ancestral houses and incorporates two new buildings into a sophisticated rural retreat. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project, completed in 2021, represents a remarkable achievement in sustainable architectural preservation and modern hospitality design, spanning 1,300 square meters. The project's distinctive approach to 'sensitive renovation' carefully balances historical preservation with contemporary functionality, utilizing traditional materials such as rammed earth, reclaimed timber, and roof tiles alongside modern elements like reinforced concrete, glass, and steel. The architectural intervention demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to the existing structures, where original rammed earth walls and historical features are meticulously preserved while new elements are thoughtfully integrated as modern insertions. The design incorporates innovative features such as elevated roofs with clerestory windows that flood the interiors with natural light while offering panoramic views of the surrounding bamboo forest. The new buildings, characterized by their rough concrete facades designed to weather naturally, establish a compelling dialogue with the landscape, while strategically placed metal-frame windows create artistic vignettes of the countryside from within. This hospitality project stands as a paradigm of cultural preservation and sustainable tourism, offering guests an authentic retreat experience that celebrates local craftsmanship, traditional building techniques, and regional heritage while providing economic opportunities for the local community. The project's success in harmonizing historical architecture with contemporary comfort, demonstrated through its thoughtful spatial planning, material selection, and environmental integration, earned it recognition at one of the world's most prestigious design competitions, the A' Design Award, in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category.
