Floating Black Boxes Exhibition
Floating Black Boxes Exhibition is an innovative architectural installation and exhibition design concept that explores the relationship between impossible ideas and tangible reality through suspended exhibition spaces. Created by architects Onat Öktem, Ekin Ç. Turhan, and Zeynep Öktem, this Silver A' Design Award-winning exhibition features two distinctive black boxes elevated one meter above ground level, each measuring 3m x 4m with a height of 1.70m. The exhibition's conceptual framework revolves around the visualization of unbuilt architectural visions, where the floating boxes serve as metaphors for innovative ideas suspended between conception and realization. The boxes are constructed using specialized plastic materials with laser-cut grid patterns that create a modular aesthetic, supported by uniquely designed steel beams capable of 180-degree rotation in both vertical and horizontal planes. A particularly engaging aspect of the installation is its interactive nature, where visitors becoming integral components of the exhibition concept by entering the elevated boxes, with only their legs visible from the outside, physically embodying the connection between abstract ideas and concrete reality. The intentionally incomplete bottom sections of the boxes and scattered units on the ground level symbolize the ongoing nature of architectural research and development processes. The exhibition space maintains a calculated distance of 3.50m between the floating structures to facilitate optimal visitor circulation, while the innovative structural system and material choices demonstrate advanced technical execution in service of conceptual expression. This groundbreaking exhibition design, which earned recognition in the Interior Space and Exhibition Design category of the A' Design Award, represents a significant contribution to contemporary architectural exhibition practices, successfully merging philosophical concepts with physical space to create an immersive and thought-provoking visitor experience.
