Flat Panel Electroluminescent Display Screens
Flat panel electroluminescent display screens, also known as FEDs, are a type of display technology that utilizes a matrix of tiny, individually controlled light-emitting cells to produce images. Unlike other display technologies, such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs) or plasma displays, FEDs do not require a backlight or polarizing filters, which can result in a thinner and more energy-efficient display. The basic principle behind FEDs is the phenomenon of electroluminescence, which is the emission of light from a material when an electric current is passed through it. In FEDs, a thin layer of phosphor material is sandwiched between two conductive layers, and a voltage is applied to the conductive layers to stimulate the phosphor and produce light. Each cell in the matrix can be individually controlled to produce different colors and brightness levels, allowing for the creation of complex images. One of the advantages of FEDs is their ability to produce deep blacks and high contrast ratios, due to the fact that each cell emits its own light and can be turned off completely when not in use. Additionally, FEDs have a fast response time and can display moving images with minimal motion blur. However, FEDs have not seen widespread adoption due to their high cost and manufacturing complexity. The process of creating the tiny cells and controlling them individually is challenging and expensive, and there are also concerns about the long-term reliability of FEDs.
