Fisher Studio Contemporary Building

Fisher Studio Contemporary Building

Fisher Studio Contemporary Building is a modernist architectural masterpiece designed by Shawn Ewbank, serving as both a professional art studio and gallery space in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. This 158-square-meter contemporary structure stands as a testament to ecological sensitivity and artistic functionality, harmoniously integrated within a verdant landscape in composition with the client's existing residence. The building's design philosophy emphasizes the seamless fusion of creative workspace and exhibition area, featuring a sophisticated daylighting system that combines northern window walls, translucent skylights, and shaded southern clerestory windows, enabling natural illumination throughout most operational hours. Clad entirely in American Red Cedar, the structure showcases numerous sustainable features, including a 5.4kW photovoltaic solar array, LED lighting with 95 CRI at 3000k, and an integrated fresh-air intake system. The architectural program thoughtfully divides the space into two primary volumes: a main studio/gallery area with elevated ceilings for creating and displaying large-scale artwork, and a secondary volume housing the artist's study, lounge, and full bathroom. The building's entrance, concealed among wraparound decks, creates an element of discovery as visitors navigate through the carefully curated gardens. This innovative architectural solution, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in sustainable design practices while serving as one of the region's few modernist structures that successfully balances sculptural aesthetics with environmental consciousness.
