Field Garden Landscape Renovation

Field Garden Landscape Renovation

Field Garden Landscape Renovation is an innovative landscape architecture project that transforms an abandoned fruit orchard into a vibrant community garden, exemplifying the harmonious integration of agricultural ecosystems with urban life. Located in Mt. DaDu, Taichung City, Taiwan, this 2,045-square-meter development draws creative inspiration from The Wizard of Oz narrative to construct engaging garden spaces that promote social well-being and environmental sustainability. The design, completed in February 2023, preserves two 60-year-old Litchi chinensis trees as symbolic anchors at the main entrance, while incorporating sophisticated environmental considerations validated through Envi-met simulation analysis. The project features thoughtfully designed terrain variations that serve multiple purposes: noise mitigation, rainwater retention, and protection against winter winds. A comprehensive rainwater recycling system and dedicated children's ecological observation area demonstrate the project's commitment to environmental education and resource conservation. The design's innovative approach to climate adaptation is evident in its strategic vegetation placement, which creates favorable microclimates and helps counter urban heat island effects. The integration of native plant species fosters biodiversity and establishes crucial ecological corridors within the surrounding agricultural landscape, facilitating wildlife movement and habitat creation. The space is artfully organized around thematic elements inspired by Dorothy's adventures, incorporating areas for spiritual healing, physical activity, and community engagement. This thoughtful transformation, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Landscape Planning and Garden Design category, successfully addresses contemporary urban challenges while preserving agricultural heritage and promoting sustainable community development.
