FiberFlax Stool

FiberFlax Stool is an innovative eco-friendly furniture piece that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern manufacturing techniques. Designed by Francesco Frulio, this sustainable seating solution features a distinctive shell-like form crafted from a pioneering bio-composite material developed by the designer. The material, known as Fiberflax, combines flax and wool felt sourced from Sardinian craft traditions with a sustainable resin derived from wood pulp and recycled oils, achieving mechanical properties comparable to fiberglass while maintaining complete environmental compatibility. The stool's production employs the sophisticated Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) technique, borrowed from aerospace engineering, which ensures optimal resin distribution and minimal waste. Standing at 400mm in height, with a width of 420mm and depth of 380mm, the stool features legs crafted from moisture-resistant okume wood, commonly used in marine applications. The design incorporates ergonomic considerations through its slightly inclined backrest, while the wool felt component provides thermal comfort by retaining body heat and delivering a wood-like tactile experience. This Iron A' Design Award-winning creation in the Furniture Design category represents a significant advancement in sustainable furniture design, demonstrating how traditional materials can be reimagined through modern manufacturing processes to create environmentally conscious solutions without compromising on performance or aesthetic appeal.
