Extension Of Identity Villa
Extension of Identity Villa is an architecturally significant residential project completed in 2018 in AinBal El Shouf, Mount Lebanon, that exemplifies innovative approaches to modern extensions of historical structures. This award-winning architectural design, conceived by architect Tarek Ibrahim, represents a sophisticated dialogue between historical preservation and contemporary architectural expression. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design, masterfully addresses the challenge of expanding a 19th-century Lebanese dwelling while maintaining its cultural essence. The original structure, dating back to 1852, had undergone previous extensions in 1943 and 1980, each marking distinct architectural periods. The contemporary extension, encompassing 140 square meters distributed across two floors, employs a bold yet sensitive design approach that deliberately creates a visual separation while maintaining a conceptual connection to the existing structure. The architectural language utilizes smooth-cut stone blocks treated as monolithic elements, contrasting with the original building's rough-jointed stonework, while intentionally incorporating subtle imperfections that echo the craftsmanship of the historical structure. The circulation elements, notably emphasized through wood cladding, pay homage to the traditional importance of movement patterns in Mount Lebanon village houses. The project's innovative approach to spatial organization within its constrained 474-square-meter plot demonstrates exceptional creativity in meeting modern lifestyle requirements while preserving historical architectural values. The design's sophisticated treatment of materials, particularly in its contrasting yet complementary use of stone and wood, creates a harmonious dialogue between old and new, making it a significant example of contemporary architectural intervention in historical contexts.
