Etendard French Territories Identity
Etendard French Territories Identity is a comprehensive visual identity system developed between 2014 and 2015 that reimagines the territorial representation of the French Republic through a sophisticated synthesis of historical heraldry and contemporary design principles. This experimental work establishes a cohesive visual language for French territories, encompassing 27 regional logos, 96 departmental logos, and one national logo, all unified through a distinctive hexagonal grid system that ensures visual consistency while preserving historical legitimacy. The project represents a significant achievement in balancing traditional symbolism with modern design requirements, utilizing careful stylization of historical armorial bearings for departments while employing synthesized singular symbols for regions, reflecting their broader administrative significance. The design system demonstrates remarkable attention to technical precision and cultural sensitivity, incorporating a custom typeface named Maximilien with 138 glyphs. The project's methodology involved extensive research into French heraldic traditions and popular symbols, resulting in a design solution that bridges historical heritage with contemporary visual communication needs. This innovative approach to territorial identity earned recognition at the A' Design Award competition, receiving a Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design category, acknowledging its contribution to public interest design and cultural preservation. The system's strength lies in its ability to create a unified visual narrative while respecting the distinct characteristics of each territory, effectively addressing the complex challenge of representing diverse French administrative regions through a coherent design language that resonates with both historical accuracy and modern aesthetic sensibilities.
