Essence of 220 Years of the Library Exhibition is an innovative educational exhibition design project that masterfully celebrates the rich heritage of library culture through a thoughtfully curated spatial experience. This comprehensive exhibition design, created by architect Maria Gazdag with graphic design by Tamas Takacs, transforms approximately 1,300 square meters of common area into an engaging narrative space that chronicles the evolution of book production and information dissemination throughout history. The exhibition's design philosophy ingeniously incorporates historical elements such as vellum, digital surfaces, velvet, and canvas, creating a visual timeline that guides visitors through the fragmented space while maintaining the building's functionality. The design employs sustainable practices, including the implementation of energy-efficient 4000K LED lighting systems and the creative repurposing of existing picture frames, demonstrating a commitment to environmental consciousness. A distinctive feature of the exhibition is its use of catalogue tabs as a visual linking element, paying homage to traditional library systems while bridging the gap between physical and digital cataloging methods. The exhibition's color palette draws inspiration from historical book bindings, featuring lilac velvet, deep red velvet, and anthracite grey, complemented by gold accents that reference manuscript traditions. Interactive elements, including digital screens and sound terminals, allow visitors to engage with rare books and audio content, creating a multi-sensory educational experience. The project, which was completed in November 2022, received recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to spatial design and cultural preservation.
