Escala 1/100 Under Plate

Escala 1/100 Under plate is an innovative multifunctional furniture piece that seamlessly integrates architectural principles with practical design, created by Spanish architects Huberto and Oriente Aldaz González-Mayo. This sophisticated design, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, represents a harmonious fusion of architecture, sculpture, and functional furniture. The piece is meticulously crafted from laser-cut stainless steel plate and wood, comprising 13 interlocking pieces that create a complex geometric structure measuring 200mm in width, 200mm in depth, and 390mm in height. Drawing inspiration from Japanese and Swiss architectural traditions, as well as the historic Chicago Tribune 1922 competition, the design employs the golden ratio (Phi number) to achieve perfect proportional harmony. The under plate's distinctive feature lies in its versatility, serving multiple functions as a sculptural centerpiece, an illuminated accent piece when paired with a small candle, and a practical table mat. The design's technical sophistication is evident in its construction, utilizing 15mm stainless steel plate with precise 3mm folds, welded joints, and careful sanding, resulting in a refined finish that exemplifies the intersection of architectural scale and interior design functionality. This piece emerged during Spain's economic crisis as a creative response to challenges facing the architecture and interior design sectors, demonstrating how adversity can spark innovation in design thinking.
