Eragny Press
Eragny Press was a British private press founded by Lucien Pissarro and his wife Esther in 1894. The press was named after the village of Eragny-sur-Epte in Normandy, France, where the couple spent their honeymoon. Eragny Press was known for producing beautifully crafted books, featuring woodcuts and engravings designed and printed by the Pissarros themselves. The press was active until 1914, producing a total of 56 books. Lucien Pissarro was a skilled artist, and his woodcuts and engravings were highly regarded for their intricate details and delicate lines. He was also a follower of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement, and his designs reflected their principles of beauty, simplicity, and craftsmanship. Esther Pissarro was responsible for the press's typography and binding, and her designs were equally elegant and refined. Eragny Press's books were printed in small editions, usually between 50 and 200 copies, and were sold to private collectors and book lovers. The press's output included works by classic authors such as Shakespeare, Milton, and Keats, as well as contemporary poets and writers. The books were printed on high-quality paper and bound in cloth or leather, with the press's distinctive colophon on the title page. Eragny Press was part of the wider private press movement that flourished in Britain in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Private presses were founded by artists and craftsmen who wanted to create books that were beautiful as well as informative, and to revive the traditions of bookmaking that had been lost in the industrial age. Eragny Press was one of the most successful and influential of these presses, and its books are still highly prized by collectors and bibliophiles today.
