Equalizer - The Smile Curve Residential Space / Single Level

Equalizer - The Smile Curve Residential Space / single level is an innovative residential interior design project that translates acoustic principles into spatial design, specifically drawing inspiration from the equalizer's smile curve pattern where low and high frequencies are amplified while middle frequencies are reduced. This 136-square-meter single-level residential space, designed by Hua Cheng and Hsian-Li Lo, demonstrates a sophisticated interpretation of sound engineering principles in spatial design, particularly evident in its central television wall space where wood and glass elements are arranged in a distinctive smile curve configuration to enhance visual depth and spatial perception. The design philosophy integrates various materials that correspond to different musical instruments: glass elements evoke the clarity of saxophone tones, wood components mirror the piano's versatile range, and metal accents represent the resonant qualities of bass drums. This thoughtful material composition creates a harmonious living environment where each element is precisely calibrated, similar to how an equalizer balances different sound frequencies. The project, completed in March 2013 in Taipei, exemplifies how technical acoustic concepts can be transformed into tangible design elements that enhance residential spaces. The innovative approach to spatial design and material usage earned this project a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, recognizing its contribution to advancing interior design practices through its unique conceptual framework and execution.
